Tale

Four talented alien musicians are kidnapped by a music producer who disguises them as humans and reprograms them to forget their true identities and play mindless corporate pop like The Crescendolls. At one point, a soccer game appears on the monitor; the teams playing are Japan and France. The two collaborators, Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto, are French and Japanese. The scores, 2 for France and 1 for Japan, represent the number of each country. The number of strings on various instruments is incorrect.

Written and performed by Eddie Johns (uncredited) Courtesy of Virgin France. Discovery by Daft Punk has been hailed as the best dance album of all time, at least in some circles. I really liked what I heard before it; ‘Da Funk’ and ‘The Whole World’ were some of my favourite songs of the 90s.

I was always in the lead as a group to try again

When I first listened to Discovery, I didn’t really get into it except for the singles, which I didn’t get much out of. Interstella 5555 came out well after Discovery, and I was really into Anime and Daft Punk. Personally, the best thing about Interstelle 5555 is that I now love Discovery and remember what a great movie it was. Many reviews I’ve read say the plot is “paper thin”; and it’s never too much, I found myself enjoying the action and comedy while still not being able to figure out where it was going, obviously the ending was always expected. Interstella was supervised by Daft Punk, but it’s not really their film, the film is actually owned by Leiji Matsumoto, the design, story and direction are partly by Matsumoto, although his role in the film is unclear.

Why include exposition when you can show it in images?

Matsumoto is probably best known for his animated TV series “Star Blazers” and “Galaxy Express 999”. In terms of animation quality, Interstella is very good, the characters move realistically, the locations are superb and range from fantastical to downright mundane. However, the first four parts were Daft Punk music videos marketed for Discovery, the quality is exceptional, but then the film seems to go down a level with thicker outlines and repeated footage from the first four parts, that’s not to say it doesn’t look good. The best part about the film is that it isn’t limited by the music in the sense that the viewer isn’t subjected to a textual image of the song lyrics displayed on the screen. Instead, the pace of the film unfolds like a normal film, sometimes ordering the rhythm with the music and telling everything in a very visual way.

Like in the messages that pop up during the film

Basically, if you like Daft Punk, Anime, or just want to try something a little different, Interstella is worth a watch.
